Long before the Philadelphia Phillies and Athletics took the field, our town was prominent in the founding of the National Colored Baseball League and home to several important teams. The Pythians were founded in 1865 by the eminent Ocatvius Catto, and played to the delight of thousands of baseball fans at fields in South and West Philadelphia for about 20 years. The Negro Leagues were a popular attraction well into the late 1940s and were big draws whenever they'd take on barnstorming teams like the Philadelphia Athletics, New York Yankees and other big teams of the day.
